New wave of brain research aims to understanding every function

New research from the Department of Psychology is mentioned in SF Gate.

Bay Area scientists were big winners in this round of funding, with money going to projects at UCSF, Stanford, UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, plus nearby UC Davis and a handful of biotech companies. In all, more than 50 projects nationwide won grants.

Two groups at Stanford — plus a third team at UC Davis — are using optogenetic technology to control and record neurons in action inside a living brain. The goal is to design cells that are incredibly sensitive to voltage changes so that scientists can catch subtle activity as cells send and receive electrical messages.
