If you’ve ever accidentally left your smartphone at home, you’ve probably realized how many times a day you reach for your device. But for many people, that instinct to check your email every few minutes, or see what’s happening on Facebook, may be crowding out other parts of life.

UC Davis sociologist Robert Faris, who studies teenagers, said, “We see a remarkable amount of time spent on social media in particular … 10 percent of the kids in the study I conducted said they were checking social media over 100 times a day. We know that’s probably an underestimate.”
