Reading Group Support

ISS supports reading groups in order to encourage and allow faculty and graduate students to assemble on a regular basis to discuss various thematic and interdisciplinary areas of interest. Topics should be related to the social sciences, but participation of faculty and students from academic disciplines outside the social sciences is welcomed and encouraged. Submissions for 2017-18 closed on April 12, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.

We will be offering up to $500 per reading group, which can be spent over any number of quarters during the year. For instance, a reading group could meet every week during one quarter, or the funding could be spread out over the course of the academic year. Any funds not expended by June 15, 2018, will be returned to ISS to fund future groups.

We will create a page for each group at the ISS website. Each group will be expected to:

-       provide its meeting schedule for posting online;

-       provide a brief summary its activities for each quarter in which meetings are held;

-       be open to new members.

ISS reserves the right to request a refund of remaining funding from any group that does not meet these expectations.

Funding may be used to support visiting speakers, light refreshments, reading materials and/or other needs that further the academic goals of the group. No alcohol may be purchased with these funds.

Access to the ISS conference room may be granted to reading groups on a limited basis, and must not conflict with the scheduled activities of the Hemispheric Institute on the Americas, with whom we share the room.

Any faculty member or graduate student may apply. Graduate student applicants must identify a faculty sponsor, as we will be transferring the funding to that faculty member’s home department.

If you have questions about this funding opportunity, please email Vicky Austin, Assistant Director of ISS, at, or call 752-1751.

Submissions closed at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, and will be reviewed by the ISS Executive Committee. Notifications for funding will be issued in mid-May.
