Graduate Student Support

Summer Travel & Research Funds

Matching funds will be available to departments for summer travel by graduate students in the Division of Social Sciences. This could include travel to conferences or to conduct research in archives or in the field.

Dissertation Improvement Funds

ISS offers funds to the individual graduate programs in the division for competitive research support awards aimed at helping advanced graduate students successfully complete their dissertations.

Dissertation Workshops

Co-hosted by ISS and the Davis Humanities Institute, these workshops are for advanced PhD candidates to share their work and receive feedback from fellow graduate students from different disciplines. This exchange of ideas often helps students to clarify their thinking or to have breakthroughs that help them in the completion of their dissertations. Workshops are typically for 10-12 students and facilitated by two or three faculty.

The 2016-17 dissertation workshop took place at UC Davis on April 7-8, 2017. The 2015-16 workshop took place in Lake Tahoe on April 8-9, 2016. (Read a summary of the 2015-16 retreat in the ISS Journal.)

Applications for the 2017-18 Dissertation Workshop (April 13-14, 2018, at Easton Hall Conference Center in Berkeley, CA) closed on Friday, February 16, 2018.
